VRCC Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Hospital is a 24-hour emergency and specialty veterinary hospital located in Englewood, Colorado. We see patients from both as referrals from general practice veterinarians, as well as directly from clients in need of specialty veterinary care for their pet. We specialize in Cardiology, Emergency & Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Oncology & Radiation Therapy, as well as orthopedic and soft tissue Surgery.
Position Overview:
The Veterinary Technician supports hospital operations by providing dedicated quality veterinary care and exceptional service to our patients and clients. Responsibilities include providing patient care by determining animal requirements, conducting examinations and diagnostic procedures, assisting during surgery and operations, providing nursing care, assisting with feeding and caring for patients, maintaining medical supplies and equipment, overseeing triage and discharging patients, and maintaining patient medical records.
What you’ll do:
- Provide client education on proper home administration techniques, side effects, and the handling of animal waste products while on chemotherapy
- Chemotherapy preparation and administration utilizing closed systems
- Anesthesia/sedation for CT scans and biopsies
- Venipuncture for blood draws and IV catheter placement
- Client communication - relaying and discussing test results, counseling and education
- Proper and thoughtful patient handling and positioning
- Imaging - CT scanner operation, taking properly positioned radiographs and assisting with ultrasounds
- Detailed medical records

- Obtaining vitals, blood pressure, ECG, and other monitoring parameters
- Perform in-house laboratory testing

Who you are:
- Registered Veterinary Technician License Required

- Maintain a safe, secure, healthy, and humane environment by sterilizing and wrapping instruments, sanitizing and disinfecting holding and operating areas, storing sterile supplies, verifying shelf life, following standards and procedures, and in compliance with applicable legal regulations.
- Maintain medical records by documenting patients’ conditions, reactions, and changes; update the database in an accurate and timely manner.
- Communicate with the pet owner about the status of the patient, as directed by the veterinarian.
- Maintain equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining equipment supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs.
- Maintain inventory, place orders for needed supplies, verify, and maintain receipts.

- Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or the Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician (LVMT) preferred or as required by State.

Position Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
- Knowledge of the preparation, monitoring, and recovery of pets receiving surgery, as well as basic pet nursing.
- Ability to demonstrate and follow correct procedures in catheter placement, phlebotomy, emergency medicine, and digital radiology.
- Understand and limit the potential exposure to bites, scratches, and potential injuries.
- Able to restrain patients according to standard procedures.
- Fill prescriptions and monitor sedation procedures as directed by the veterinarian.

A working supervisor who performs the duties of medical technical staff (e.g., technicians and assistants) as well as scheduling and supervising the staff of the assigned department. Expedites the care and efficiency of the department. In charge of patient care standards for the department. Position Overview: The veterinary assistant provides support to the veterinarians and technicians in their daily tasks by cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising and grooming patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and clerical and administrative work. They deliver quality care for all patients and provide exceptional service.
Essential Functions:
- Provide compassionate care to all patients
- Greet patients and their owners as they arrive and show them to an examining room, taking the patient's weight and other vital signs upon arrival
- Triage patients, perform physical exams, treatments, and administer medication as directed by the licensed veterinary technicians (LVT's).
- Calm and soothe anxious patients
- Assist doctors and technicians with the administration of medications or with patient restraint
- Perform laboratory tests and take radiographs
- Operate and maintain hospital equipment, including EKG, fluid pump, syringe pump, scales, anesthetic monitors, and machines, etc.
- Fill prescriptions, calculate and administer medications, maintain proper documentation, logging, and security of controlled drugs.
- Feed patients as prescribed by the attending doctor or as the client has requested; record appetites; recognize and report any unusual conditions or abnormal behaviors
- Communicate in a positive manner with clients and ensure that they feel comfortable leaving their pet(s)
- Educate clients about insurance, wellness, and medicinal plans

Provides technical assistance and Supervision to the veterinary technician staff. Provides a positive goal-orientated technical supervision promoting an atmosphere of support and quality. Must be detail-focused and have the ability to multi-task, interact, and communicate positively and effectively. Must positively reflect concern and consideration when interacting with patients, clients, medical staff, and employees. Demonstrates independent critical thinking skills for radiology operations. Ensures that facility technical and documentation expectations are consistent with policies, procedures, and protocols established by the Medical Director for all equipment, coordinates all radiation safety officer. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in imaging, ensuring the delivery of high-quality diagnostic images for accurate patient diagnosis. You will be responsible for operating equipment, preparing patients for procedures, and maintaining accurate patient records.
Experience/Skill Requirements:
- Five (5) years of experience as a specialty veterinary technician or related position, required.
- Prepares room, equipment, and exam materials needed for imaging.
- Prepare, position, transfer patient as needed.
- Performs diagnostic radiology procedures, providing safety for self, patients and all other individuals.
- Performs IV starts and contrast administration as required.
- Produces quality images in a complete, accurate and timely manner.
- Observes patient and equipment during the procedure and reports / documents unusual occurrences and records patient’s condition.
- Facilitates smooth patient flow, scheduling and optimal use of equipment/resources.
- Assists with patient transport as needed.
- Performs image quality review (IQR) audits of CT studies to address quality concerns directly with Radiologist, Veterinarian and medical director.
- Performs daily quality assurance.
- Maintains clean work area for employees and patients.
- Monitors and cleans equipment.
- Maintains quality checks and equipment maintenance documentation per department procedure.
- Proactive in problem identification and following up with appropriate management personnel.
- Notifies Medical Director of equipment problems and logs the service call/problem per department & helps fix equipment as needed
- Excellent written and verbal communication with the ability to communicate complex nuances of CT and other radiologic technology to different groups with different educational levels.
- Practices all rules and regulations pertaining to radiation safety, reducing personal and patient exposure to “as low as reasonably achievable” (ALARA).
- Communicates in writing and verbally with all Radiologists, Technicians, Veterinarians and hospital staff in facilitating the continuum of care.
- Correctly inputs charges and required data for procedures and for supplies utilized during the procedure/exam.
- Completes required hospital/medical imaging paperwork for each exam performed.
- Maintains high skill level through ongoing education/meeting attendance and shares information with staff.
- May assist in the clinical and/or didactic education for veterinary assistants and technicians.
- Provides guidance for development of clinical skills, explains equipment and department procedure, and supports hospital and program policies/procedures.
- Actively participates in department/hospital quality and process improvement initiatives.
- Maintains compliance with all State, Federal, accreditation and hospital regulations and standards.
- Demonstrates effective time management and is proactive in prioritizing workload and meeting productivity requirements.
- Adapts to rapidly changing technologies, policies, regulations, patient load and staffing through priority setting and flexibility.
